Summary: The DIY (do-it-yourself) market in France increased by 4.4% to reach 19.15 billion euros in 2005. The sector had an average annual growth rate of 4% between 1995 and 2005. 66.8% of the total sales were achieved through the DIY stores itself. Nevertheless, the per capita spend in France increased from 775 euros in 2004 to 754 euros in 2005. There were 3,178 DIY stores in the country at the end of the year 2005. The market is dominated by DIY brands like Leroy-Merlin and Castorama, which together control half of this market. In spite of this, discount stores like Home Deposit are gaining the market share in the DIY segment. The average surface of a DIY store is 2,200 square meters.
